Toto La Momposina
Her vast repertoire incorporates Colombia’s indigenous rhythms porro, puya and gaita with the Afro-Latin cumbia, bullerenge, chalupa, garabato and mapale from the Carribean coast. Like her ancestors, Toto La Momposina comes from the village of Talaigua by the Magdalena river.
She comes from a family who have been musicians for five generations and she was introduced to her musical culture as a child, travelling from village to village learning the rhythms and dances of the region, as well as the art of the Cantadoras – the traditional rural singers. In 1968 she formed her own group and set out on her professional career.
She quickly gained a huge reputation and international tours followed. In 1982 she accompanied Gabriel Garcia Marquez to Stockholm to perform when he received the Nobel prize. She has lived in France and Germany, is now based in Colombia and has recorded over a dozen albums.
